Urinetown – the settled law case

#, #, #, #

Very few disputes make it all the way to the court – and Playbill has reported that a settlement has recently been reached between the creative team of the Broadway production of Urinetown (the musical) and the Akron production team. The reported settlement includes the payment of an undisclosed sum by the Akron production team in lieu of a licence fee for the use of the intellectual property belonging to the Broadway director John Rando, choreographer John Carrafa, lighting designer Brian MacDevitt, costume designer Gregory Gale and scenic and environmental designer Scott Pask.

The settlement seems to bring this dispute – framed as a copyright infringement and breach of unfair competition rules to a close.
Practitioners should note that a licence to perform any show is likely only to allow the public performance of the script / music as supplied – not the additional elements referred to above.
The Playbill report can be found here.
