Section 73 of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 came into force on 12 January 2010. It abolished the common law offences of sedition and seditious libel, defamatory libel and obscene libel.

Taking these off the statute book simplies UK law, but also opens the way for the UK government to make stronger representations to other governments about free speech.
